Gardening Tips For September

Use our handy monthly calendar to schedule these simple maintenance tips to make your garden look its best.

Better Garden Tips

Take cuttings of annuals such as Coleus, geraniums, Pentas, double Petunias and Thunbergia for use as winter houseplants.
Plant hyacinth and daffodil bulbs in early to mid-autumn.
Gather leaves for composting. Mix green and dry materials and alternate with thin layers of soil or compost for more rapid decomposition. Don’t forget to water and mix between layers.
Keep deadheading garden flowers so plants won't look messy or waste energy making seeds.
Dig, dry and store tender bulbs such as Gladiolus, Dahlias, tuberous Begonias and Caladium.
Plant lily bulbs as soon as you receive them. Mulch to prevent soil heaving over winter.
